The Bintje

For years, the Bintje was the ultimate potato variety in the Netherlands; suitable as a nice table potato and for making fries and crisps. The Bintje remained popular until problems arose with its cultivation - it was susceptible to potato cyst nematode; a soil-borne disease in which nematodes originate in the soil and multiply. These nematodes, similar to small worms, feed on the roots of the potato plant, gradually reducing the yield over the years. As a result, the need arose for varieties resistant to this.

Aside from this, the popularity of quick-service restaurants in Europe meant an increasing demand for longer fries. The Bintje was too short to meet this demand so the Netherlands and Western European potato-breeding companies developed new varieties. These were grown with specific characteristics and qualities for both the table potato market and the chip market, as well as for the production of crisps.

The Agria

The Agria is a variety with a long oval shape, developed specifically for the production of fries. The flesh of the Agria is yellow but when fried, has the beautiful golden colour preferred in Western Europe.

The sister of the Agria is the Victoria, which is less yellow in colour but still a good 'chipper'. Both the Agria and the Victoria are the varieties of choice for making fries and are popular in the foodservice, retail and cafeteria sectors.

The Innovator

The Innovator is the ultimate, internationally appreciated French fry potato. With its long, white flesh tubers, the Innovator is the favourite potato of worldwide quick-service restaurant chains. The long tubers are ideal for cutting French fries and meet expectations across America, Asia and Europe with its consistent taste, appearance and quality.

The Innovator, like the name implies, is a young variety that replaced and improved some previous types with better characteristics. The Innovator is also not very susceptible to potato diseases, meaning it is both tasty and reliable.
